A Techronicler interview with Deneille Guiseppi

Meet Deneille Guiseppi, a software developer who is proving that the most powerful code is the kind that serves humanity. With a background from McGill University and a focus on AI Safety, Deneille is currently operating in stealth mode, co-founding a startup that leverages technology to counter trafficking. We sat down with her to discuss her work with Public Invention, why “communication” is the most underrated technical skill, and her refreshing advice on the value of “learning slowly.”
Please share with our readers your experience in tech + what you currently do for work (and passion projects)!
I am a software developer with a background in web development, data analysis and software testing. I graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science and a minor in Mathematics. My pursuit to meld both technology and social impact has led me to Public Invention, an organization that pursues humanitarian invention projects, and conducting research for different AI Safety/Accountability communities like The Midas Project and Apart Research. Currently, I’m working, in stealth, on her first founding startup venture that blends AI and social good. I’m also a member of Rewriting the Code.
What problem are you most excited to be working on right now?
Right now, I am excited to work on social impact projects where I can lend my technical insight. Currently, I am co-founding a startup that focuses on tech for good within the counter-trafficking space.
What skill has been most important to your growth in tech so far?
I believe great communication is the most important skill that has led to my growth. Software developers are mostly working within a team, and regardless of if we are in-person or remote, developing a great rapport and open communication with your teammates is essential. Great communication has afforded me a lot of opportunities, within and outside of my team, and it has quickly cleared up any questions I’ve had with regards to a project or task that I am working on.
What is some advice you want to give to other young women in the industry Black women entering the tech space? / What advice would you give to your younger self entering tech?
The advice I would give to myself, four or five years ago, would be to not rush and enjoy learning slowly and enjoy the moment where you are now. I wanted to have the job that everyone said I was supposed to have yesterday, but slowing down and enjoying my work has opened up so many more possibilities for me that I could never have imagined, but they fit me perfectly. I would also tell myself that you’re still learning but you are brilliant and meant to be in the job– you’re not an imposter, just a new fish in the pond still learning to swim. Give yourself grace.
What do you want people to understand about Black women in tech that often gets missed?
Black women are not a monolith (ha!). Being a minority within the workplace is daunting, black women are brilliant and a lot of us in tech are teeming with ideas so let’s create space for us to be able to express them for those of us who struggle at first to do so.
From her research in AI accountability to her work in the counter-trafficking space, Deneille is defining her own path—and doing it at her own pace. Her reminder that “Black women are not a monolith” challenges the industry to look beyond stereotypes and listen to the individual innovator. We look forward to seeing her stealth startup come to light!
