Compensation and Consent
The “innovation/privacy” tradeoff is often a false dilemma that companies use to fend off oversight and regulation. The next word is often “China.”
AI developers need data to train models, so the data is valuable (there’s a reason it’s called “data mining”). The two biggest ethical issues are compensation and consent/privacy.
Regarding compensation: if I’m paying for a product or service, but that product is also gaining value by using my data, should I not be compensated for this?
X (formerly Twitter) has lost a lot of ad revenue since being purchased by Elon Musk, but it makes a lot of money by licensing partners to use its data (i.e. people’s tweets).
Because of lawsuits against OpenAI and others for data scraping – and due to OpenAI’s buying of publishing companies to gain access to their texts without violating copyrights – we know that X’s data, and the data collected by platforms like Microsoft, is a gold mine.
But it is the users of these platforms that are generating this data. What are our rights to it? Ought we to be compensated if a company makes billions from it?
Regarding consent and privacy: do I know they are using my data? Can I opt out? Can I see what they are using it for? If developers were transparent about these questions, they could access a lot of data without violating potential privacy issues.

The key ethical consideration to focus on is achieving a balance between bias and privacy.

We firmly believe that it is possible to balance privacy and innovation. However, in an era where AI promotes a culture of speed, it is crucial to dedicate time and effort to establish a clear and unbiased framework for reviewing data. This includes ensuring due diligence in anonymising data and removing biases.
The temptation to indiscriminately use massive volumes of unreviewed documentation for AI training must be resisted.
A thoughtful, deliberate approach is essential to maintain ethical standards while fostering innovation.
