In Conversation with NOELLE GARRICK

A Techronicler interview with Noelle Garrick

In an industry often obsessed with the “next big thing,” Noelle Garrick offers a refreshing perspective: stop trying to fit into the box, and let technology mold itself to you. With a background blending Visual Art and Computer Science, Noelle currently serves as a Management Associate at McMaster-Carr, where she leverages data and AI to solve complex business problems. We sat down with Noelle to discuss how she overcame her initial resistance to AI, why humility is her most technical skill, and the importance of silencing the noise to find your own path.

Techronicler:

Please share with our readers your experience in tech + what you currently do for work (and passion projects)!

Noelle Garrick:

I’ve always been drawn to creative technology and studied both Visual Art and Computer Science in college. I currently work as a Management Associate at McMaster-Carr, an industrial supply company, where my day-to-day focus is more on data analysis, problem-solving, and people skills than heavy coding. Outside of work, I stay creatively technical by building passion projects, including a story-based avatar builder I’m currently designing. I’m also a member of Rewriting the Code.

Techronicler:

What problem are you most excited to be working on right now?

Noelle Garrick:

At work, I’m excited by the challenge of thoughtfully integrating AI to streamline daily tasks and uncover new insights. I was initially resistant, but learning how to script and prompt effectively has been empowering. I create more dynamic deliverables that adapt to different inputs instead of producing one-off solutions.

Techronicler:

What skill has been most important to your growth in tech so far?

Noelle Garrick:

Humility has been the most important skill for my growth. Being willing to ask “obvious” questions, learn from people who know more than me, and start with the simplest possible solution has helped me build stronger systems overall. Focusing on clarity before complexity has saved time, reduced noise, and made my work (across all areas) more impactful.

Techronicler:

What is some advice you want to give to other young women in the industry Black women entering the tech space? / What advice would you give to your younger self entering tech?

Noelle Garrick:

Let tech mold itself to you instead of trying to mold yourself to tech. There’s a lot of noise around the “best” languages or tools, and while they can be fun to explore, technology ultimately touches everything. Growth comes from curiosity and openness to tools that complement the ideas you are most passionate about. I spent too long trying to fit into boxes that weren’t right for me just to feel on the leading edge and seem more impressive. It’s not sustainable.

Techronicler:

What do you want people to understand about Black women in tech that often gets missed?

Noelle Garrick:

There isn’t anything uniquely difficult about tech itself; it’s hard to exist in any space where representation is limited. The barriers black women face aren’t about ability or interest, but about access, visibility, and support. Looking back, I realize I lost more opportunities to self-rejection than to closed doors. That absence of belonging can quietly narrow what you allow yourself to reach for.

“I realized I lost more opportunities to self-rejection than to closed doors.” Noelle’s insights serve as a crucial reminder that the barriers Black women face in tech are often structural, but the breakthrough comes from refusing to count yourself out. Whether she is designing story-based avatars or streamlining industrial supply workflows, Noelle is proving that clarity often outweighs complexity.
