The greater processing efficiency of Deepseek is essentially a double-whammy when combined with its open-source posture. Not only can you have the code, but it’s literally an order of magnitude cheaper to work with it.
However, a big bottleneck will remain if hardware GPU production continues to lag behind demand or if prohibitive tariffs are imposed on lower-grade GPUs.

Yes, they are clever, advanced probability engines, but the claim to intelligence is inflated, as evidenced by the shifting of the goalposts to promote AGI. Seeing who pays for the next big innovations is going to be interesting.
Deepseek reportedly cost $6M to fund, a drop in the ocean compared with Silicon Valley R&D budgets. What’s becoming apparent is that, much like global electric car production, the economics of AI are far more complex than they appear on the surface.

Open-source projects will no longer just chase proprietary models; instead, they will define the cutting edge, creating a new era for AI development.
To this point, DeepSeek was able to develop a very high quality model at low cost, which shows that solving AI development challenges is not bound by computing. It is more bound by talent, with the current AI landscape creating a false sense of scarcity.

Instead of merely catching up to proprietary models, open-source projects like DeepSeek will be at the forefront, shaping the future and defining the standards in AI.
The Hype is Set to Wear Off
I think that the DeepSeek hype will be short-lived.
In my opinion, what’s driving the growth is the fact that both major AI chatbots, ChatGPT and Claude, are not using open-source models and have a lot of safety guardrails built into them.
Open models, on the other hand, have this perception that apps built on them will be uncensored in a way and that they can be used for chats that are much more insightful and personal.
As more chatbots come up that use open models like Meta’s Llama ones or Google’s Gemma model series, the novelty of DeepSeek will eventually wear off.

A Demonstration of Technical Prowess
We learned a jarring lesson from DeepSeek’s AI model.
We now recognize that American AI developers are not the only smart people on the planet. Our best minds have been granted a wake-up call by the Chinese. Everyone has acknowledged that DeepSeek’s creators were incredibly innovative, although somewhat disingenuous about DeepSeek’s training cost.
If China’s goal was to demonstrate their technical prowess and push back on the US’ attempts to prematurely claim global dominance, they accomplished that objective.
However, they may have also spurned our programming community to accelerate AI development even more and to climb out of our self-imposed mental boxes.
In this way, the introduction of DeepSeek at this moment in time will have unexpectedly negative consequences for China’s efforts to compete for global AI leadership.
Our world, the data center design and construction industry, will not look at DeepSeek as any more than a speed bump as we accelerate even faster towards AGI.
